NAACP scouting Baltimore sites for future national headquarters - Baltimore Business Journal:

City economic development leaders have reached out to officialsw atthe , which is hoping to shed its longtime home in the Setoj Business Park in northwest Baltimorre for newer space. The organization is seeking about 30,000 square feet of space and has been shown a numberr of locations in the city that could fit the board memberAtwood “Woody” Collins III said during the economicf development agency’s monthly meeting Thursday morning. The organization is also considerin g locations in the SilverSpring area. Representatives from the NAACP could not be immediately reachedfor comment. BDC Presidenrt M.J.
“Jay” Brodie said his agency reached out to the NAACPl several times in the past under the leadership of NAACP ChairmanJulianb Bond, who along with former NAACP CEO Bruce Gordon said he believeed the organization should be in or as close as possible to Washington, D.C. D.C. officials had offered the NAACPl $3.5 million in funds to be used towardits $25 milliob relocation plans. But concernz surfaced soon after Gordon’s announcement, including from Baltimore officialzs who wanted to keep the organization in The NAACP has been in the city since when it moved from New Baltimore officials had proposed several alternativr locations inthe city, and offeredr the NAACP a $500,000 to keep the organizatiob in Baltimore.
Among the alternate locations was a site near Port Discovery at PowerPlant Live, planned for a $70 million redevelopment by the , and property on the city’sw west side which now serves as the worlf headquarters for . Gordon resigned from the organizatio n in March 2007 and was replaced as CEO byBenjamih Jealous. Brodie said that leadership changee opened the door for talks between the city and BDC Board Chairman Arnold Williams said he recentlty met with Jealous atthe Governor’s Mansiobn during the NAACP’s Centennial celebration May 14 in a meetingh brokered by Gov. Martinn O’Malley.
O’Malley, Williams said, suggested the NAACP consider stayingin Baltimore, Williams said optiones including access to roads, transit and Baltimore/Washington Internationao Thurgood Marshall Airport as key components to NAACP’sd site selection process.
