Sara Lee sells foodservice direct-store delivery business to Farmer Bros. - Houston Business Journal:

The deal will make Torrence, Calif.-basedx Farmer Bros. (NASDAQ: FARM) the nation’sa largest direct-store delivery business for coffee andallied products, and give the institutionaol coffee roaster a substantial Houston according to Jim Lucas, a spokesman for Farmer Bros. In addition to the Houstohn plant, Farmer Bros. will acquire 20,000 Sara Lee customers; more than 60 facilities; a fleet of vehicles; a distributioh and spice facility inOklahoma City, Okla.; and 10 brands of coffeee including Superior Coffee. Superior Coffere is roasted in Houston and two othefr SaraLee plants. Farmer Bros. will licenses the brands back toDownerds Grove, Ill.
-based Sara Lee (NYSE: SLE) for a transitioh period, according to Sara Lee. The agreement also callds for both companies to havea "reciproca co-pack arrangement" for the supply of certai n coffee and tea products for the next thre years. Lucas said the Houston plant, which employs 200 is an important part of the acquisitiomn forFarmer Bros. not only becauses of its size, but for economic such as to cuttransportation “Right now, the company is roasting coffed in Torrence and driving it to N.C.,” he added. The companies expect to closs the agreement inearlh 2009.
